Comparison of Mobile wallets

In one of my earlier posts i had explained the evolution of various methods of payments. One such recent invention in payment system is payment through mobile wallets (or Soft currency)

We take some examples of such wallet applications and do a short comparison similar to the comparison which i did for cloud storage platforms

Following are popularly known wallet applications:

  1. Airtel Money
  2. ICIC Pockets
  3. PAYTM
  4. PayZapp
  5. Chiller
  6. PayUMoney
  7. Vodafone m-pesa
  8. Citrus
  9. Ola Money
  10. Mibikwik
  11. Itz Cash wallet

These are to name a few. There are lot more which has not attracted any customer base.

Hopefully there will be more in future and it will be regulated by RBI as GOI is very keen to move into mobility.

Though I m not favouring a huge participants in wallet segment I m hoping that at one point if time when this segment saturation point low level companies will drop out. Simultaneously GOI will start regulating this segment also.

If you see the above mentioned list very few participants are well known such as paytm, and itz cash. Some are specific to one purpose such as ola money.

I have not tried all thevsaidvwallet but I would love to and explore each one of those. I would strongly suggest each one of you to share your experience in using wallets

OTC payment simplifier

Cash payment is becoming obsolete.
Card payments r growing rapidly.
Mobile wallet payments r increasing in number...

With the advent of mobile wallet payments, it is very clear that it will replace card payments very soon.

Now how do we increase the usage of wallet to accelerate the growth?

Let's analyse the problems of wallet payments.
This is not the result of any market study or research... Rather it is just sharing of personal experience.

Firstly, how payments have evolved.
1. Centuries before, barter system was the only way to purchase any products.
2. Later it slowly got released by monitory currency of large numbers...
3. Then after the invention of technology after several centuries plastic currency (cards) replaced the cash transactions.
4. Now mobile wallet is emerging.
Transformation from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 took several decades (even centuries). But 3 to 4 appears to be a quick transformation ...

We don't need to investigate what's good in 4 and what's bad in 3... It will be pointless... Coz both r good and bad in some aspects. I would say both r equally balanced..

But my personal opinion is whether can we make 4 even stronger?

Anyhow because of growing startups and inventions we will see a 5th type of payment option sooner. But we cannot let it go with the same disadvantage which I felt on mobile wallet payments.
Let me stop the buildup and come back to topic.

Now, what is the problem in wallet payments (or soft cash)??
1. In the barter system there is no price tag for any product. And people in those era does not require a price tag.
Later some period there came a pricing in numbers for every products which introduces cash transaction. And people get cash in hand by way of wages or salary. Which was easy for them to pay everything in cash.
2. Later when salary was credited directly into back people want to do two step process for any purchase. One is to withdraw cash from account and then pay for our purchases. Excess cash withdrawal will result in idle cash.
3. Later introduction of debit card for purchase which reduced the two step process to one step since people need to withdraw cash and have it in reserve (thought it is practically possible to make card payment every time, it was helpful to a certain extent)
4. Later introduction of credit card. (Interesting facts and history of credit card will be posted in my next blog post).
This again went back to two step process. One is making payment while purchase and credit card bill payment. This increased liquidity so this process was adopted by public much faster.

The reason why explained all these is to understand how every payment method was adopted and what made public to adopt the new methods. Let's think about the wallet payment system.

Mobile payment system introduces a three step process which is even more complicating. In the step we need to load cash into our wallet through credit card, then we need to make payment (only to those merchants who will access such payments), and make payment to credit card. Another disadvantage is that if we load cash into our wallet through our bank account is, it will not fetch any interest rather money lying in Bank account will fetch some amount of interest.

We have to overcome all these challenges and build a robust system or another payment method and enjoy multiple interventions while purchasing.

NEWS… Is it actually the abbreviation of North East West South…?

How do you think NEWS got its name?
Is it North, East, West and South?
Does it make any sense when you say that NEWS stand for North East West South?
If it is an abbreviation, then do you see the news in capital letters everywhere?
The answer for all the above questions is ‘”No“.

The answer is:
NEWS is not an Acronym.
What ever you watch or hear in News is a new information (atleast for the first time). Instead of naming the broadcast as “New Information” it was termed as News (Plural of New).

Is “Jana Gana Mana…..” really India’s National Anthem….?

Initially Indian National Anthem “Jana Gana Mana” was sung in the year 1911 in Calcutta. But if you notice the words used in the anthem you would find that only northern territories of Hindustan (India and Pakistan together) was used, such as
“Punjaba, Sindha, Gujarata, Marta”
“Vindhya, Himachala, Yamuna, Ganaga”  – All these are Locations of North India.
Why would Rabindranath Tagore mentioned only northern locations? Why did he ignore all of south India?
Actually, this song was not sung in relation to India’s independence, Instead this was written and sung to welcome “King George V”. At that period British was in complete possession of Northern territories of India. He was responsible for shifting India’s capital from Calcutta to Delhi.
But still there is a question why this song was considered as National Anthem? Is it because none other songs were good enough or encouraging and enthusiastic as this song?

AD and BC what does it mean?

While referring to any historical facts we usually suffix the year with either AD or BC.

Now, what is AD and BC?

Most of the people will say it as BC - Before Christ and AD - After Death. Is that right?

The answer is "No"

I will ask you one question. If we say both the periods as "Before Christ" and "After Death" where do you classify the 30+ years during which Jesus Christ actually lived? Gotcha...

Now let me brief on both these things...

BC - Before Common Era (Formerly called as BCE)
AD - Anno Domini (Means: "Year of the Lord" in Medieval Latin)

BC (or) BCE:
In common man's understanding BC means "Before Christ" which is also correct to a certain extent where AD calendar numbers were started only after the birth of Jesus and to mark the era of Jesus christ. So our understanding on BC is partially correct.

AD:
This is our topic for discussion. Jesus was believed to be born between 6 - 4 BC. Anna Domini calendar numbering system was invented by "Dionysius Exiguous". History can always be predicted and cannot be confirmed, like wise Dionysius Exiguous created this calendar to predict the year of Ester in which he partially succeeded. This AD calendar was developed approximately in year AD 525 but not extensively used till AD 800.

All under one Cloud

Online Storage

There are various online services which provide free storage online called cloud storage. Most of these provide mobile and desktop applications. Few of the services are explained below:
________________________________________________________________________

Google Drive:
This service is provided by Google. Initially the website was in the name docs.google.com. But later on, Google has renamed the service as Google Drive or GDrive. This is the cloud storage webapp which enables document creation and collaboration also. This is one of the widely used cloud service because all the attachment in GMail will be opened in GDrive and hence, GMail users are using this service regularly. Documents created in drive.google.com, will be in the format of gdocuments, gslides and gsheet. This is the file format of google’s document webapp. But still we can edit and export the documents in MS Office format. We cannot open any of the google’s formats in any locally installed applications. It can be opened only in web browser.

Box Sync:
www.box.in this website provides the service of file storage and sharing. This is a most popular storage service rendered by a not so popular company. Just like other services, this also allows local storage and local file sync. This is the only website which has a widget in “linkedin” website. We can share and collaborate files stored in box.in through the widget in linkedin. There is no need of sharing the link through any mails for collaboration. Storage upgrade of unto 100 GB at 10$ per month.

Dropbox:
This is the most popular mobile cloud storage application. It takes automatic backup  the data in phone and saves it in web which can be retrieved in an device which can be connected to internet. Even though it provides only 2 GB of free storage per member, the storage and retrieval is hassle free in Dropbox.

Cloud Drive:
This service is provided by Amazon. Main disadvantage which i noticed in this application is that the location of syncing folder can be specified by us. It stores in a default location. Other than that there is no major worries about the service.

5 GB - Free
20 GB - $10.00 / year
50 GB - $25.00 / year
100 GB - $50.00 / year
200 GB - $100.00 / year
500 GB - $250.00 / year
1000 GB - $500.00 / year

In addition to this, Amazon allows to store 250 imported songs as free storage. as an upgrade, we can store 250,000 songs at the price of 24.99$ per year.

Sky Drive:
As we all know Sky drive is the online document storage service provided by Microsoft. If we paste a file in the synced folder in our local disc, it will not upload those files to Sky drive website. This is one of the drawback which, I feel, should be made available is the file upload through folder feature. We need to login in SkyDirve web page to upload any documents.

Creative Cloud:
This is a product of Adobe systems. This is not just a cloud storage service, it is much more. They offer various applications developed by Adobe through this Creative Cloud service. At present it does not allow folder sync but that feature is coming soon. It does not allow to store documents, instead we can store the wide range of adobe applications and app data in its cloud service.

iCloud:
Apple has named its backup cloud storage service as iCloud. There is a tight integration between mail application and document collaboration in iCloud. This doesnot allow the users to save files in our desktop, but we can create and edit documents such as Pages (Like MS Word), Number (Like MS Excel) and Keynote (Like MS Powerpoint) in www.icloud.com. If we have any such files in icloud webapp, those files will automatically appear when we open the installed iWork application (Like MS Office). iCloud is also used to sync photos taken in the iOS devises. Only iWork formats can be stored in iCloud. Apart from this other services such as iCloud keychain, calendars, Mails etc are shared among the devices using iCloud service. Upgrades:

10 additional GB (15 GB total): $20/year
20 additional GB (25 GB total): $40/year
50 additional GB (55 GB total): $100/year

Author introduction

Hi There,
Warm Welcome to you.

Firstly let me introduce myself.

I am Karthiram from Chennai, India. I have completed Masters in Commerce from University of Madras.

My areas of interest are
1. Investments (related to general public in India)
2. Technology (board term though but yes it is)
3. Process excellence (Mostly official)
4. Gardening - Both backyard and rooftop gardening
5. Renuable energy

I am the best example of "Jack of all, Master of None"

I can exactly correlate the statement with my areas of interest. Means, I don't have vast knowledge in any of those things but know little of all those things.

I have thought of lot of questions and got answers for few of those, but I never got opportunity to share those answers to anyone. So I created this blog and will be regularly sharing my thoughts. Atleast I will be feeling as if someone will be reading it and will find it helpful.

I should admit that my posts may not be precise and perfect but definitely it will be debatable. Also most of those might be taken from other websites or books or news papers which I will be sharing by mixing some of my thoughts. It is just like clicking the share button on Facebook where you share other person's thoughts through your profile.

I am not great in English so i will be using barely simple language in all of my posts except for those which I think the originality should be transferred to my readers with appropriate language of source article.

I do not intent to criticize any particular person or a community or a religion. These are just words of my thoughts, so please ignore my post if it hurts anyone.
